Vic PC repairman jailed for Myki porn scam

A Victorian man who bombarded high school boys with child porn images gained access to the students after repairing one of the victim's computers.

Computer technician Kenneth Palliser, 62, fixed the teenager's computer in 2010 and then later posed as an attractive woman to befriend the boy and two others, aged 15 and 16, before posting child porn images on their Facebook pages.

Palliser also created a computer virus that mimicked a Myki public transport survey but when an unsuspecting user clicked on it, the virus would dump child exploitation images onto the user's computer.

The Mitcham man was sentenced on Tuesday in the Victorian County Court to a maximum six year sentence, but must serve at least four years in jail.

A jury had found Palliser guilty of seven charges relating to the offending, but he was acquitted of one count of knowingly possessing child pornography.

The Mitcham man also pleaded guilty to two charges of failing to comply to reporting conditions he was subject to as a serious sex offender after he was convicted of contaminating a public place with child porn images in 2007.

In sentencing Palliser, Judge Gabriele Cannon said his offending was sophisticated and involved significant pre-planning.

She noted he did not distribute the images for profit, but said at least if he had done this he would have been targeting like-minded individuals, not unsuspecting ones.

"Your intent was to confront as many people as possible with child porn images," Judge Hannon said.

"You have played a significant role in the evil trade of the exploitation of children."

She said his prospects for rehabilitation were fair, as he is open to receiving treatment.
