A Victorian MP has apologised for ordering his driver to chauffer his dogs between his city and country homes.

The Herald Sun reports Corrections Minister Steve Herbert used his taxpayer-funded car as a taxi service for his pooches Patch and Ted.

The newspaper says the four-legged friends were chauffeured from Parkdale to Trentham.

On Wednesday night, a spokesman issued a statement on behalf of Mr Herbert admitting that the trips weren't in line ministerial expectations.

"The minister has apologised for the use of the ministerial car and has acknowledged it doesn't meet community expectations," the spokesman said in a statement to AAP.

The Department of Premier and Cabinet has confirmed that it had not received a complaint from the driver.
