Thief steals Rose Batty's precious memories of Luke

A thief smashed a window on Rosie Batty's car and stole her handbag while she visited a Victorian memorial garden planted for her murdered son.

Channel Seven reports that her handbag contained credit cards and precious photos of Luke Batty, who was 11 when his estranged father killed him after cricket training in February.

The break-in reportedly left Ms Batty too shaken to attend the Friday afternoon opening of the garden at the Tyabb Cricket Club.

Police said the theft occurred about 2.45pm on Monday while Ms Batty was visiting the memorial garden.

The garden was officially opened on Friday on the site of the cricket nets where Luke's father Greg Anderson killed him with a cricket bat and knife.

The nets were taken down after the attack and replaced with a walk-through garden.

"As the garden is growing it's a reflection of Luke growing," Tyabb Cricket Club president Sam Taranto told AAP on Friday.

"We want to bring the whole issue to a close now and move forward. Obviously we'll never forget but we can start to move forward."

Through donations from Cricket Australia and Victoria and the proceeds from a celebrity T20 game, the club raised $100,000 for the new garden and four new training nets.

Cricket Victoria regional cricket manager Jason Mathers said the garden and training facility were a new beginning for the club.

"The nets were too raw and no one wanted to go over there so they had to go and this is a real drive to get people back there," he said.
