Vic man was interested in terrorism: trial

A man accused of using an al-Qaeda magazine to prepare for a terror attack was recorded having a conversation that demonstrates his interest in bombs, prosecutors say.

Adnan Karabegovic, of Officer, is on trial in the Victorian Supreme Court after pleading not guilty to possessing material connected with assistance in a terrorist act.

In his opening address to the jury on Monday, crown prosecutor Jeremy Rapke QC said Karabegovic was recorded on May 18, 2012 discussing a magazine article about using a bomb to start a bushfire in Australia with his brother.

The article was in the ninth edition of al-Qaeda magazine Inspire, Mr Rapke said.

He alleges the conversation "at the very least" demonstrates Karabegovic's interest in making bombs in Australia, and his familiarity with Inspire.

Karabegovic is also alleged to have said he wanted to do something "much bigger" after he displayed anti-West banners in January 2012.

Defence barrister Julian McMahon said the magazine - Inspire - was not prohibited and Karabegovic denies a terrorist act was contemplated.

"He denies that there were activities underway," Mr McMahon told the court on Monday.

"All those central allegations are denied."

The trial before Justice John Dixon resumes on Tuesday.
