Vic man remanded over toddler hit-run

A Melbourne man has been remanded in custody over an alleged hit-and-run crash that knocked down a toddler and a baby.

Anthony Villella, 20, is facing 11 charges, including stealing a car and driving recklessly all while on bail for other offences.

Two women pushing a pram with a two-year-old and an eight-month-old baby were struck by the car as they were crossing a Cragieburn road on May 30, police say.

The toddler suffered a broken leg while the baby was taken to hospital as a precaution. The two women weren't injured.

Villella did not have a lawyer as he appeared in the Heidelberg division of the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday afternoon.

He unsuccessfully applied for bail, telling the court he had to look after a young son and go to work.

The Mernda man is accused of stealing a 1996 Nissan Skyline on May 28 and obtaining stolen registration plates two days later, court documents show.

It will be further alleged he drove recklessly in a stolen car in Cragieburn on May 30, mounting a footpath and crashing into a barrier before hitting pedestrians.

He is also charged with several breach of bail offences, including failing to report to police, driving when not allowed and not obeying a curfew.

He was remanded in custody to reappear on June 15.
