Vic man lured child, stabbed her 25 times

A Victorian man with cerebral palsy lured a little girl into his home, sat on her chest, stabbed her 25 times and removed her T-shirt, but she fought back and escaped.

He also tried to take her shorts off but couldn't because the girl's legs were crossed.

Ty Ranger had gestured for the five-year-old to join him outside his Ballarat flat, "shepherded her away from adults" and cuddled her before taking her inside.

The 25-year-old then sat on the girl, stabbing her to the face, neck, chest, back and abdomen before removing her T-shirt and touching her chest and groin.

He was convicted in the County Court of Victoria on Monday of intentionally causing serious injury and one charge of possessing child pornography following the violent attack in November 2015.

Ranger has difficulty walking, talking and eating, and falls regularly, but has no mental incapacity.

The girl escaped by biting Ranger on the lip, causing him to drop the knife, and fleeing to her mother, covered in blood.

Police seized Ranger's mobile phone and found two child porn images among a collection of 154 adult pornography pictures.

Judge Roy Punshon said although Ranger had pleaded guilty to the charges at the earliest stage, he denied he had attacked the girl.

"You said she picked up a knife on a coffee table and she was injured as you tried to get it off her," he said.

"That's inconsistent with your plea of guilty."

He said as a result, Ranger had not demonstrated remorse and had not given a reason for the attack.

However, Judge Punshon said evidence suggested the attack was sexually motivated.

Ranger has problems with alcohol, has suffered suicidal thoughts since being in custody, and has attempted to harm himself.

He was sentenced to a maximum nine years and one month with a minimum non-parole period of six years and three months.

He has already served 492 days in custody.
