Vic man guilty of station manslaughter

A man who stabbed a stranger outside a Melbourne train station has been found guilty of manslaughter.

After deliberating for just an hour on Friday afternoon, a Supreme Court of Victoria jury found Cody Frost not guilty of murder, but instead returned a guilty verdict for the lesser, alternative charge.

Frost killed 24-year-old Marcus Rowley at West Footscray on August 5, 2017, but claimed he acted in self-defence.

The court was previously told Frost was with a friend named Bethany Micallef when they got off a train at Tottenham station at 6.42pm.

An intoxicated Mr Rowley alighted at the same station and asked them for a cigarette, the court was told.

The friends and the victim went their separate ways, but Frost and Mr Rowley crossed paths again, with the killer yelling out "get away", the jury heard.

Ms Micallef said she didn't realise what had happened until she saw news of the death the following day.

A pre-trial committal hearing was told Mr Rowley died from a single stab wound in the right side of his chest after Frost armed himself with a large chef-style knife.

Frost will return to court on May 30 for a pre-sentence plea hearing.
