One man is dead and two others are critically injured after a van rolled over and veered into a tree in country Victoria.

Paramedics arrived at a stretch of the Hume Freeway in Boho about 1.40pm on Boxing Day and found a man in his 50s, believed to be a passenger, dead at the scene.

The driver, also in his 50s, was flown to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne suffering from head and arm injuries.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the man was in a serious but stable condition.

Another man aged in his 50s was taken by helicopter to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with collarbone and hand injuries, while three other people were transferred to local hospitals in Wangaratta and Shepparton with minor injuries, Mr Mullen said.

The death brings Victoria's road toll for the year to 252, six more than this time last year.

* The national road toll period runs from 0001 December 23, 2015 until 2359 January 3, 2016, local times.
