A man rescued after spending three hours trapped in his car while it lay flattened under a truck on a Melbourne freeway has died.

The 54-year-old man's car was wedged between two trucks, with one truck's wheels sitting above the driver's area, in Point Cook on November 13.

His car was stopped in a line of traffic at a Princes Freeway off-ramp during the morning peak hour when it was rear-ended by a truck, setting off a five-vehicle collision.

The Footscray man died in hospital on Sunday night.

Police on Monday said they are yet to formally interview the truck driver and want witnesses to come forward.

"We have done a lot of work around piecing together this collision and we are aware there were a number of other vehicles in the vicinity when it happened," Detective Sergeant Chris Carnie said.
