Vic man confesses to front yard shooting

An accused killer confessed to bashing a man with a baseball bat before shooting him with a gun he said fell from the victim's clothing, a Melbourne court has been told.

Anwar Teriaki, 21, was gunned down as he ran from his alleged killers near his Roxburgh Park home on August 9, 2017.

Eighteen months later Ahmed Alhamza, 21, Ali Alkhafaji, 23, Maytham Hamad, 24, and, Ali Kadik, 22, were charged with his murder.

A lawyer for Kadik told Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday his client had since admitted beating Mr Teriaki with a baseball bat before shooting him "with a gun (that) fell from the deceased's clothing".

In the police interview, Kadik also implicated a co-accused and another unnamed person, prosecutors allege.

"From that point when police asked clarifying questions, he answered no comment."

Kadik has not entered a formal plea to the charge of murder.

The court was also told on Tuesday DNA linked Alhamza to a baseball bat found in the car of the victim.

Magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg asked if the shooting was related to a feud between "two syndicates or gangs" but prosecutors said it was unclear if the victim was involved with gangs.

He then sought clarification as to whether Mr Teriaki had any criminal history.

All four men are due to return to court on August 12 for a three-day committal hearing which will test the strength of the prosecution case.
