A man found dead at a Melbourne boarding house had 18 stab wounds and his housemate has been charged with murder.

Gary Sean O'Connor, 53, of Springvale, is charged with one count of murder and breaching a community corrections order.

O'Connor, dressed in a blue disposable jumpsuit and with a cast on his right arm, unsuccessfully applied for bail in an out of sessions hearing in Melbourne on Wednesday night.

He admitted in a police interview to stabbing the victim twice, police informant Detective Senior Constable Christopher Saulle told the hearing.

A verbal argument at the house became physical between the pair about midnight on Tuesday, Det Snr Const Saulle said.

Other housemates ran out to find the victim crouched over in the hallway. One called police while another attempted CPR.

CPR efforts continued when police arrived, but the man died at the scene and O'Connor was found with blood on his hands and clothes, the hearing was told.

O'Connor told police he stabbed the victim twice, but the man's body had 18 incise wounds and blunt force trauma to the face, Det Snr Const Saulle said.

O'Connor told the bail justice he was on prescription medication and needed an x-ray for his right arm next week.

The bail justice refused to release O'Connor because he posed an unacceptable risk to public safety.

O'Connor was remanded in custody to appear in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Thursday.
