Vic livestock ship fire under control

A fire burning in a feed silo on a livestock ship off the Victorian coast is now under control.

Emergency crews were called to the livestock carrier in Portland, on Victoria's southwest coast, on Tuesday night.

A silo filled with 800 tonnes of pelletised stock feed caught fire on the ship, which had no livestock on board at the time.

Country Fire Authority incident controller Mark Gunning said crews began unloading the fodder from the ship on Saturday afternoon into waiting trucks and have made good progress so far.

"Fire suppression activities over the last few days to bring the fire under control and lower the temperature within the silo to a safe level has allowed for this unloading procedure to occur," Mr Gunning said on Sunday.

He said once the pellets had been unloaded they would be transported to an approved holding facility.

The Port of Portland operations have not been affected by the fire and business continues as normal.
