Vic Libs win donations but lose election

The Victorian Liberals were given four times as much in donations as Labor - but still lost an election.

The Liberal party received more than $10.4 million in donations in 2013-14, compared to Labor's $2.4 million.

But the flood of cash wasn't able to help Denis Napthine's first-term coalition government keep its tiny majority in November.

The Victorian Nationals pulled in $1.1 million, while the Victorian Greens reported $543,000.

The single biggest donation was $2.7 million to the Liberal Party from the Cormack Foundation, a fundraising arm set up to raise money for the party.

Two CFMEU branches donated a combined $334,000 to the Labor party, and $25,000 to the Greens.

The Electrical Trade Union donated $360,000 to the Greens, but only $135,000 to Labor.

Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber said the major parties were "hopelessly conflicted" by donations from property developers, energy companies and the gambling industry.

"A huge number of decisions that affect these industries will come before this government over the next four years, and they have a hopeless conflict of interest before they even start," Mr Barber said.
