Vic Libs look to standalone CFA laws

Victoria's opposition is vowing to push through presumptive rights cancer compensation laws for firefighters if they form government after next month's state election.

Both career and volunteer firefighters would be protected in the legislation, to be introduced in the first sitting week of next year, Liberal coalition emergency services spokesman Brad Battin announced on Saturday.

Rules to provide fair and timely access to compensation will cover 12 specific types of cancers where the presumed cause is their firefighting, in line with legislation currently before parliament, he said.

Current proposals have stalled in the upper house, unable to move through because that legislation also includes CFA reforms that are not backed by the opposition or crossbenchers.

"We need to protect the CFA, but more importantly we need to protect the volunteers that protect us," Mr Battin said.

"This is the biggest issue for firefighters."
