Victorians are being asked to count koalas to help protect the threatened Australian icon.

Environment Minister Lisa Neville launched the first Great Victorian Koala Count on Sunday, inviting the community to participate by recording koala sightings.

Data captured from the count on November 7 will be used to develop conservation, protection and management actions for koalas and their habitats.

"We have large numbers of koalas in Victoria and this count will increase our knowledge of where they do and don't live and help us to manage them effectively," Ms Neville said on Sunday.
