Vic integrity laws to be beefed up

A shake-up of Victoria's integrity laws will see the anti-corruption watchdog get increased powers to investigate politicians, judges and public servants.

The changes mean the Independent Broad-Based Anti-Corruption Commission will have the power to probe misconduct in public office and will reduce the amount of evidence required before an investigation can begin.

The Auditor-General will also have the ability to "follow the dollar" on public-private partnerships and monitor how private companies spend public money.

Premier Daniel Andrews, marking his first year in power on Sunday, said the relevant bills would be introduced into parliament next week.

"The IBAC commissioner in his report to parliament after one year's work, under the previous government, indicated he needed changes and we are delivering on those," Mr Andrews told reporters in Sydenham on Sunday.

The current integrity system has been described by experts as one of the weakest in the country and Mr Andrews said those who understood the system had sought the changes.
