Australia's first indigenous children's commissioner has signalled his intention to step down from the role.

Victorian Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People, Andrew Jackomos, will not seek reappointment when his current term ends in June 2018, the government announced on Tuesday.

Mr Jackomos was appointed as the first state Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People in 2013, in response to the growing rates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in care or in the youth justice system in Victoria.
