Homosexual activity has been officially struck off as a crime in Victoria and people with historical convictions can now apply to have their records expunged.

Convictions can now be wiped by making a confidential application to the Department of Justice.

"These offences should never have been a crime. The expungement scheme will right historical wrongs and free individuals from unjustly wearing a criminal record," Attorney-General Martin Pakula said on Tuesday.
