Vic govt says no to kangaroo cull plan

The Victorian government has hosed down a proposal for recreational shooters to cull kangaroos amid concerns the growing numbers are a road hazard.

Shooters and Fishers MP Daniel Young has proposed an open season for kangaroo hunting as a way of controlling the state's kangaroo population.

Mr Young says he's been presented anecdotal evidence about kangaroos increasingly becoming a road hazard.

"I'm not in a position where I can say there definitely is problems in certain reas, but what I've been calling for is some investigation into that," he told 3AW radio on Monday.

He wants the state government to consider allowing people to hunt kangaroos with a permit from the Department of Environment.

The need to control kangaroo populations is more important than Australia's sentimental attachment to Skippy, Mr Young says.

"People say to me all the time - 'But they're on our coat of arms, they're a national emblem', and I really don't understand how that can weigh in on a viable solution."

Councils from Bendigo, the Macedon Ranges, Mt Alexander and surrounding areas last week wrote to the Victorian government expressing concerns about the effects growing kangaroo numbers were having on road safety and farming.

The councils asked Environment Minister Lisa Neville to prioritise the issue in order for kangaroo numbers to be managed effectively.

But the government says it isn't considering any kangaroo culling.

Both Mr Young and the councils say they only have anecdotal evidence about the increase in kangaroos.
