Vic govt goes cold on train station revamp

A billion-dollar revamp of Melbourne's iconic Flinders Street Station appears unlikely to go ahead under the new Labor government.

A design competition to redevelop the station, run by the previous Napthine coalition, cost taxpayers at least $1 million and came up with a design estimated to cost $1-$1.5 billion to build.

Premier Daniel Andrews said the project wasn't among his infrastructure priorities, and he was not certain there was a business case to support it.

"This was a colouring-in competition funded by the previous government. Several millions of dollars were effectively wasted on it," Mr Andrews told reporters.

"We'll wait and see whether there's a business case.

"We were not elected to spend billions of dollars on that project.

"We were elected with different priorities."

Mr Andrews conceded there were maintenance issues at the station in need of attention.

Opposition attorney-general John Pesutto said the government needed to clarify its position on the "treasured icon".

"It's not clear whether it supports any upgrade of Flinders Street Station, whether it's going to walk away from the upgrade completely, or whether it's going to look to re-profile the designs that we have so far," he told reporters.

Mr Pesutto said the previous Napthine coalition had demonstrated commitment to the upgrade by spending money on its design.
