New 116-turbine wind farm for regional Vic

A newly approved 116-turbine wind farm in regional Victoria will power more than 250,000 homes once it's built, the state government says.

The $662 million wind farm at Murra Warra near Horsham is expected to produce 420 megawatts of power and employ 610 people during the construction phase.

RES Australia chief operating officer Matt Rebbeck on Wednesday couldn't say when construction would start but said the project would be built.

"RES is focused on getting projects into the ground as quickly as possible," Mr Rebbeck told reporters.

"We're currently building the Ararat wind farm... that's about two-thirds of the way through construction at the moment."

Planning Minister Richard Wynne says the Murra Warra announcement means in 2016 the government has approved 228 turbines across four wind farms.

"It's important to acknowledge with the Murra Warra project there was not one objection," Mr Wynne told reporters.

The wind farm will create 15 ongoing jobs and generate about $1 million a year for the local council in rates.
