Vic fishmongers to fight net ban

A petition aimed at heading off a proposed ban on commercial fishing nets in Victoria's Port Phillip will be delivered to parliament on Monday.

Fish retailers will hand the petition, with thousands of signatures, to Greens Victorian leader Greg Barber on the steps of Parliament House ahead of a vote in the Legislative Council on Tuesday.

If approved, the ban will come into effect in 2022 but retailers say the move will cost jobs, cripple the $77 million commercial fishing industry and take many varieties of fresh fish of the state's tables.

Commercial fishers will park their boats and trailers in Spring Street as the petition is delivered.
