Vic firefighters question female push

Firefighters have raised concerns about the Victorian government's push to get more women into the service, saying it could jeopardise safety.

The United Firefighters Union wants to see more women on the frontline but is concerned proposed changes to the Melbourne Fire Brigade's selection criteria, which fast-tracks female recruitment, could compromise safety standards.

"Of course we want a fire service that reflects contemporary Australia, but not at the cost of standards and community safety," says senior firefighter Louise Cannon, a veteran of 27 years.
