Vic minister still backs CFA over union

Victoria's emergency services minister has reiterated her "grave concerns" over the firefighters' union's desire to have veto powers over CFA management.

Jane Garrett's renewed support for the CFA comes a day after Premier Daniel Andrews refused to publicly back the authority in its long-running pay dispute with the firefighters' union.

CFA management says three clauses proposed by the union would threaten its existence.

"I certainly have grave concerns around the veto," Ms Garrett told reporters.

"I've made that very clear and I do support the CFA in those matters."

But the minister denies there's a rift between her and the premier.

"We are one in wanting this matter resolved as quickly as possible," Ms Garrett said on Wednesday.

"He also made it clear he's not about negotiating individual clauses on a radio program or through the media and that's appropriate."

Ms Garrett played down the possibility she could be forced by Mr Andrews to back a deal containing the three controversial clauses.

They include an effective veto on management decisions, a limit on the ability of the chief officer to allocate and deploy resources, and potentially negative impacts on volunteers who make up the vast majority of the CFA.

It's understood newly-appointed CFA chief executive Lucinda Nolan will not sign any agreement that includes the clauses.

The CFA and UFU returned to the Fair Work Commission on Tuesday.
