Vic fatal crash accused bailed

A man has been charged with dangerous driving causing death and culpable driving over his alleged role in a fiery Melbourne drag race crash that killed two teenagers.

Adem Aparci, 21, of Delahey, was released on bail at an out-of-sessions court hearing on Thursday night after he was charged over the January 27 crash on the Western Ring Road.

The driver of a Holden ute, 19, and his passenger, an 18-year-old woman, died when their car crashed through a guard rail near the EJ Whitten bridge, rolled down an embankment and burst into flames.

Major collisions Detective Sergeant Steve Hill said Arpaci admitted to driving on the ring road at up to 180km/h.

Soon after he entered the freeway, a blue Holden ute approached at high speed and overtook him, Det-Sgt Hill said.

He said Arpaci followed the ute and the pair accelerated and slowed repeatedly a few car lengths apart at up to 130km/h until they passed the last speed camera before the crash site.

Det-Sgt Hill said the Holden then accelerated and Arpaci followed suit.

The Holden driver lost control at about 160km/h and crashed, he said.

"Investigators believe the evidence supports that the accused aided and abetted the driver of the blue Holden ute in the death of his female passenger," he said.

Arpaci admitted to attending the Northern Skids, an organised illegal drag racing and hoon driving event in industrial back streets, twice before the fatal race.

Det-Sgt Hill alleged Arpaci had been spoken to about the incident by police, and he handed himself in on Thursday and made full admissions.

Arpaci is employed, lives with his parents, had offered to hand in his passport and had his car confiscated by police on Thursday, he said.

But he said police opposed bail because of the seriousness of the charges.

In applying for bail, Arpaci said he would agree to any bail terms, and that he has been "so different" since th crash.

"I don't go out a lot, I have been at home and my parents can confirm that.

"I just sit in my room. It's the only place I feel comfortable. I've been getting so many flashbacks.

Arpaci was bailed on strict conditions including that he not drive a motor vehicle, to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday.
