Vic emergency crews issue festival warning

Emergency services have warned revellers against going to a music and camping festival in regional Victoria that doesn't have permits.

The Maitreya Music Festival, near Charlton, runs from March 11-14 and is expected to attract up to 8000 people.

However, it was not granted place of assembly permits by Buloke Shire Council for the event on public land at Wooroonook Lake.

The decision to not grant permits was upheld by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal last month.

One of the reasons a permit would not be granted is because several aboriginal artefacts were found where the festival was meant to be held, and because of the high impact of the festival on its surroundings, a cultural heritage plan was needed but there was insufficient time for one to be done.

Following the VCAT decision, festival organisers were ordered to let patrons know not to attend the venue, as there would not be a festival or any facilities on the site.

But in an update on the event website, organisers also advised they had "secured a fantastic new venue just down the road from the lake" and the event would go ahead.

On Tuesday, both the CFA and Ambulance Victoria issued warnings that anyone who attended the event would potentially put their safety at risk because emergency services would not be there.

"We are concerned that, despite a VCAT ruling upholding the decision not to grant a permit, event organisers are proceeding without appropriate planning and services," Ambulance Victoria said in a statement.

CFA District 18 Operations Manager John Bigham said he was "staggered" organisers are determined to push ahead.

"It's simply irresponsible to hold such a large event without even the most basic services including water, toilets, showers, medical care or fire management services," he said.

Victoria Police said on Monday they were monitoring the situation and strongly discouraged organisers from going ahead.
