A Melbourne driver caught travelling at nearly twice the legal speed limit has told police he was speeding because his passenger needed a toilet.

The 22-year-old man was driving at 109 km/h in a 60 zone when police pulled him over around 4am Thursday.

The driver, who had two passengers in the car, was on an international licence.
