Vic driver jailed for fleeing crash

An unlicensed driver who crashed into a parked car then sped off leaving a father to bleed to death on the side of a Melbourne Highway has been jailed for 18 months.

Cameron Poulter, 48, said "no, no" and "sorry, I didn't see you", after he hit a Toyota parked on the side of the Nepean Highway on August 31, 2014, causing Velauthar Muruhesapillai, 65, to be crushed between two cars.

Poulter, who has an extensive criminal history, then fled the scene of the accident.

Mr Muruhesapillai had pulled over to exchange details with the driver of the Toyota after the two were involved in a minor collision.

He was standing between the Toyota and his own taxi when he was fatally injured by the two cars.

Mr Muruhesapillai died at the scene.

Victorian County Court Judge Geoffrey Chettle said there was no indication Poulter had been speeding when he hit the Toyota but it was a most reprehensible thing to leave a pedestrian who has been injured.

Poulter went to a doctor on the morning of September 1 with a fractured sternum and told the doctor he had been involved in a fatal crash.

Judge Chettle said Poulter falsely told the doctor he had fled the scene because other taxi drivers started coming after him with baseball bats.

"In my view your prior criminal record may well have given you cause to flee the scene," Judge Chettle said on Monday.

"You saw the horrific injuries to Mr Muruhesapillai.

"You left to protect yourself and avoid police."

Poulter faced court in Victoria 26 times between 1985 and 2011 for 249 offences including another count of failing to render assistance at the scene of an accident.

Following the August 31 crash he pleaded guilty to one count of failing to assist at the scene of a crash in relation to the death of Mr Muruhesapillai, and two summary offences of careless driving and unlicensed driving.

Judge Chettle said Poulter's moral culpability was high as he jailed him for 18 months and ordered him to serve a community corrections order of 18 months.

Poulter was also fined $1000 for careless driving.
