A cyclist is in hospital after being thrown over a car in a hit-and-run incident in Melbourne.

Police say the 51-year-old Glenroy man was riding his bike in Footscray on Tuesday morning when he was hit by a car as it tried to turn into a fast-food restaurant.

The cyclist rolled over the car's boot after being struck and landed on the road.
