A cyclist has died after being hit by a truck while taking part in an annual recreational bike riding event.

Police believe the 60-year-old, who was taking part in the Great Victorian Bike Ride, clipped the wheel of a bicycle in front of him, then fell onto the road where he was hit by a truck travelling in the same direction.

The incident occurred just before 11am at Barwhite, about six kilometres from Mansfield.

The cyclist died at the scene.

The Bicycle Network, which stages the event, said the man was a great friend to many on the ride.

It is offering support to those on the ride.

"His loss is keenly felt throughout the close knit community," the network said in a statement.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time."

Victoria's road toll is now 237 compared to 213 this time last year.
