Vic crime suspects have to hand over DNA

Victorians as young as 15 who are suspected of committing a serious offence could soon be required to give up a DNA sample without police requiring a court order.

Under the proposed laws if a suspect wasn't charged, or was subsequently acquitted, the DNA sample would be destroyed to protect their privacy.

"Victoria's current DNA regime makes it more difficult to collect DNA than it is for police in other state," Attorney-General Martin Pakula told reporters on Wednesday.
