Accused Vic people smuggler bailed

A Melbourne man accused of smuggling people into Australia from Indonesia has been released on bail.

Australian Federal Police arrested Adin Armin, 40, at Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport on Sunday night as he allegedly attempted to leave the country.

He allegedly illegally brought 15 people from Indonesia to Australia between 2010 and 2013.

The majority of the alleged arrivals took place in 2013, the AFP say.

Armin faced court on Monday charged with three counts of organising for a person to illegally enter Australia and one charge of organising for a group of people to illegally enter Australia.

Family members were in court to support him.

His application for bail was granted after police did not oppose it.

The AFP said in a statement the arrest should serve as a warning to people smugglers in Australia and overseas who believe they have avoided the law for their crimes.

The AFP continues to actively investigate allegations of people smuggling even where the arrival of boats occurred a number of years ago, the statement said.

"Those who seek to facilitate and profit from an industry that exploits vulnerable people and is inherently dangerous remain firmly in our sights," the AFP said.

Armin will return to court on April 18.
