Vic council calls for new power station

A Victorian council wants a new "efficient power station" to replace the closing Hazelwood coal-fired power plant.
Latrobe City Council mayor Kellie O'Callaghan said a new power station would ensure energy security, jobs, stabilise energy prices and underpin Alcoa's aluminium smelter, amid fears it could close.
Ms O'Callaghan said with the Hazelwood power station set to shut down at the end of March, the region had not been offered a staged transition to closure, and she called on state and federal governments to help out.
