Vic dragging its feet on regulating Uber

While the head of Victoria's taxi union believes legalising Uber is inevitable, the Andrews government is dragging its feet on the issue.

With NSW announcing its intention to legalise Uber on Monday, all eyes have turned to Victoria where Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan says the state is still grappling with the complexity of the ride-sharing industry.

Ms Allan told reporters the "newness" of Uber and "that sort of technology" was still unknown and the state government would not rush its decision.

Earlier this year, the Andrews government established a quarterly Ministerial Forum looking into the taxi and hire car industry.

Some of the parties involved are the Victorian Taxi Association, Uber Black and Victoria Police.

Ms Allan said while the panel provided advice to the government on regulating Uber, there was no "uniform view" on how the government should act "given the diversity of that group".

The response is at odds with Victorian Taxi Association chief executive David Samuel, who said on Monday that a similar solution to NSW was not far off for Victoria.

"I think it's inevitable, guys, that this service will be regulated. I don't think there can be any doubt about that," he told 3AW on Monday.

Victorian taxi drivers went on strike in September to protest against UberX, which allows drivers to use their own car to take passengers.

The drivers want Uber shut down or for governments to introduce a level playing field that would make Uber drivers pay the same licence and registration fees as taxi drivers.
