Vic shooting victim in serious condition

A man who was shot in the head but managed to drive himself to a Melbourne hospital is in a stable but serious condition.

The man, named in media reports as Nabil Maghnie, was shot through the windscreen of a car about 1.20am on Thursday.

He suffered injuries to his head and body, and was shot at least twice, police say.

Maghnie managed to drive the car to Epping Hospital before he was transferred to Royal Melbourne Hospital.

"He is in a serious but stable condition," a spokeswoman told AAP on Friday.

The victim is known to police, but investigators have declined to elaborate on his identity or associates.

Police believe the shooting was a targeted attack.

It's unclear if investigators had on Friday located the scene of the shooting, after admitting on Thursday a crime scene had not yet been established.

Police on Thursday also appealed for witnesses who may have seen a car being driven erratically in the northwestern suburbs about 1am that morning, or heard gunshots, to come forward.

Forensic investigators were seen examining the sedan the victim had driven to Epping hospital.

Maghnie is reportedly linked to the Comancheros outlaw motorcycle gang.

He was previously investigated over the shooting of former Banditos enforcer Toby Mitchell outside a Brunswick gym in 2011, according to numerous media reports.
