Vic cops deliver baby by roadside

Two Melbourne policemen delivered more than a traffic fine by the side of a busy Melbourne road.

Senior Constable Jamie Mackenzie and First Constable Milan Radenkovic pulled over a car in Dalton Road, Thomastown, about 10.20am on Thursday but when they went to speak to the male driver they found a woman in labour in the passenger seat.

The policemen, both fathers but with no experience delivering a baby, called an ambulance.

Snr Const Mackenzie laid the woman on the nature strip as his partner started to relay instructions from Ambulance Victoria.

"It all happened a bit quickly, and we were about 10 minutes forward of the advice they were giving us," Snr-Const MacKenzie told AAP.

"The baby was already crowning."

Snr Const Mackenzie said he was forced to follow his instincts and let nature take its course.

"I told the mother to keep pushing and when the baby was born I cleared the airways and held her until the ambulance arrived about three minutes later," he said.

"We were happy. The mum and dad were very happy and the baby was happy.

"And we were back on the road a few minutes later, out fighting the good fight."

Paramedics took mother and baby to the Austin Hospital in a stable condition.
