Hunt for driver who attacked Vic cop

A driver who mowed down a police officer at a roadblock on a Victorian freeway is still on the run but police have new clues about his identity.

The senior constable was hit by the car on Wednesday after police motioned to the driver to pull over.

Police were taking part in an operation outside the Eastlink tunnel about 1.20pm when they noticed the dark Ford Falcon XR6 sedan with stolen number plates.

The sedan stopped as directed before it drove straight into the officer, who fired at the car in a split-second decision that saved his life, the Police Association says.

The officer has been released from hospital and is recovering at home.

"He's in good spirits, he's very sore," Acting Superintendent David Griffin told reporters on Thursday.

Police are concerned the driver could put the public in danger.

"He's very intent on evading police and we just don't want anyone to get hurt," Acting Supt Griffin said.

The car was last seen in the Kew area at 1.30pm on Wednesday.

CCTV footage also shows the car at a petrol station on Mountain Highway in Bayswater two hours before it reached the police roadblock.

Its driver filled up with petrol and drove away without paying.

"We suspect the vehicle has been used in relation to other crimes, but that is yet to be confirmed," acting Supt Griffin said.
