A Melbourne policeman allegedly lied to authorities after he was involved in a supermarket car park crash.

Jamie Robert Mackenzie, a senior constable, and Stephen John Paterson both appeared before Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Monday charged with perverting the course of justice.

Mackenzie is accused of lying following a crash in the Greensborough IGA supermarket car park on Boxing Day 2015, claiming that he was not the driver, instead giving Paterson's name.

He has also been charged with reversing in the car park when it was unsafe to do so, failing to give his name and address in an accident in which property was damaged, and failing to give police his identity as the owner of a vehicle.

The case was adjourned until April 4.
