Vic commits to improved safety for firies

The Victorian government will implement all 14 recommendations and suggestions put forward by a coroner who investigated the deaths of two young Victorian firefighters in 2013.

Environment department firefighters Katie Peters, 19, and Steven Kadar, 34, were back burning part of the Harrietville bushfire in February 2013 when a falling tree hit their truck and killed them.

An inquest handed down late last year found there was sufficient collective information available for managers to pull them out of the fire zone, but the system failed.

The government on Thursday said the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning had, in its formal response to the coroner's report, committed to implementing all of his proposals.

Staff working in forests throughout Victoria have already been educated to ensure they understand how to identify and mark hazardous trees - with an increased focus on reducing the exposure and impact of hazardous tree incidents.

CORONER JOHN OLLE'S RECOMMENDATIONS:

* More detailed and frequent briefings about bushfire locations

* Ensure the protection of human life is always the first priority

* Design fire trucks better able to withstand falling trees

* Don't send firefighters to fire-affected alpine ash forests unless absolutely necessary
