A baby boy remains in a critical condition in hospital after being struck by a forklift at a Geelong automotive workshop.

The nine-month-old's father was at the wheel of the forklift when the accident happened at Moolap on Saturday night.

The baby's condition has remained unchanged according to a Royal Children's Hospital spokeswoman, who also confirmed the boy had surgery on Sunday morning.

It's believed the baby was crawling on the floor of the Blackley Automotive car restoration business, but Victoria Police say it's unclear how the accident occurred.

The Victorian WorkCover Authority is also looking into the circumstances.

"We are aware of it and we are investigating," a spokesman said.

A witness who was in a neighbouring workshop when the accident happened said the child's father was devastated.

"I saw (the boy's dad) running out the front. The look on his face was just devastating," Varian Hancock told News Ltd.

Four children and their parents may have been living at the business after falling on hard times, News Ltd is reporting.
