Vic anti-IS fighter's girlfriend charged

The Melbourne girlfriend of a would-be freedom fighter has been caught by police trying to fob off traffic infringement demerit points on an innocent Dutch man.

Jamie Williams planned to join the fight against Islamic State in the Middle East and was charged with attempting to enter a foreign country with the intention of engaging in hostile activities.

The charges were dropped in February last year at the request of federal Attorney-General George Brandis.

Williams' girlfriend, Jessica Naumovic, blamed a Dutch driver for failing to obey traffic lights and exceeding the speed limit in 2014 and 2015.

According to court documents, the Netherlands man told Victoria Police he did not know Naumovic, but at one time was required to drive vehicles while working in Victoria as a mechanic.

While the fine was paid, the Dutch man copped the demerit points.

Naumovic was arrested and interviewed in October 2015, telling police she could not remember if she was driving on the particular dates of each infringement.

However, police figured out what was happening after seizing Williams' phone and analysing Facebook conversations between the two lovers.

Ms Naumovic was initially charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

In Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Thursday, those charges were withdrawn and replaced with the lesser crime of providing false information to police.

She was placed on diversion to avoid a criminal record and fined.
