Parts of Victoria are on flood watch with a severe weather warning in place for coastal and alpine areas.

A strong cold front expected on Tuesday afternoon could bring damaging winds and heavy rainfall, the Bureau of Meteorology says.

Alpine areas could experience gusts up to 110 km/h and a possible 70mm of rain may cause localised flash flooding about the higher peaks.

Coastal areas could be battered by winds up to 90 km/h from midnight associated with showers and thunderstorms.

Conditions should ease on Wednesday morning.

Locations which may be affected include Warrnambool, Portland, Wonthaggi, Bright, Falls Creek and Mt Buller.
