A local councillor is being expelled from the Victorian Labor party after allegedly supplying a gun to a mafia member.

Acting Premier James Merlino says he believes processes are underway to oust Moreland councillor Michael Teti over the allegations relating to convicted crime boss Frank Madafferi.

Mr Teti pleaded guilty in December to carrying a loaded gun in his car but was still invited to vote at Labor's March state conference.

Mr Merlino would not comment on why Mr Teti wasn't expelled from the party when those gun charges were laid and said questions should be put to state secretary Noah Carroll.

Mr Carroll and assistant secretary Kosmos Samaras have not yet replied to AAP questions about Mr Teti.

Mr Teti and his lawyer were also contacted for comment.
