A man sexually abused as a child by his grandmother's former partner has faced his attacker in a Melbourne court and says he won't let the ordeal consume his life.

His abuser, who cannot be named, committed the crimes over a seven-year period, beginning in the late 1990s when his victim was seven.

The man, aged in his 60s, continues to deny he did anything wrong, but was found guilty by jury last year of five counts of indecent act with a child under 16 and one count of sexual penetration.

His defence barrister conceded there was no remorse when the man fronted a Melbourne court on Thursday for a plea hearing.

The man's victim said it was hard to describe the emotional impact the offending had on his life.

He had suffered a loss of innocence, felt alone as a child and believed he had not been able to reach his full potential, he told the court.

The victim also continued to have nightmares and recurring panic attacks.

"I'm not going to let it consume me any more," he said.

The boy was abused on and off until the mid-2000s, the court heard.

The man's barrister told the court the man had suffered abuse himself, but there was no link between that and his offending.

The man was supported in court by family, including his current partner.

He will be sentenced on Friday.
