Vic abortion protest law to finally pass

After a marathon debate in Victoria's upper house, a bid to ban protesters within 150 metres of abortion clinics looks set to become law.

The bill was voted through on Tuesday night but then went into the committee stage, where opponents of the new laws demanded details of many of the finer legal points.

MPs ended the sitting at 4.25am on Wednesday with the laws still not officially passed.

The Sex Party - which first introduced the bill before the government co-opted it - expects it to pass on Thursday.

Opponents have asked to bring the exclusion zone down to 15 metres, and that amendment will be voted on when MPs debate the bill again.

Sex Party MP Fiona Patten has previously said she supports protesters' right to protest, but women were being harassed as they entered abortion clinics.
