Vc firefighters win action against CFA

Victoria's Country Fire Authority must abide by a staffing agreements made with the union four years ago, the full bench of the Federal Court has found.

The CFA and United Firefighters Union entered into an enterprise bargaining agreement in 2010.

It included a section committing the CFA to employ 342 career firefighters over a six-year period, as well as commitments around the number of firefighters to undergo training per year.

There was a protracted legal battle over the validity of the agreement, but the court ruled in the union's favour on Thursday, finding the commitments must be adhered to by CFA.

UFU Victoria secretary Peter Marshall said the decision was a win for firefighters and community safety, and he called for the resignation of the CFA board.

He said the board had wasted taxpayers' money trying to undo the EBA.

"It's a great day for justice," Mr Marshall told AAP on Thursday, speaking out of court.

The CFA said it was considering the court's ruling.

"The CFA will carefully examine the judgment of the court, and consider if it has any impact on the CFA," a spokeswoman said on Thursday.
