Members of a Melbourne RSL are "disgusted' by the defacing of a war monument on the eve of Anzac Day.

"War is Murder" was spray-painted alongside anarchy symbols on a war memorial outside the Warrandyte RSL, in northern Melbourne, overnight.

The memorial honours the lives of those who died during battle.

Warrandyte RSL president Henk Van Der Helm was told about the defaced brick shrine early this morning, and went to view the damage alongside other members.

"There was a Vietnam Veteran here this morning and he was disgusted," Mr Van Der Helm said.

"We're all pretty disgusted."

The red paint has since been scrubbed off the monument ahead of Anzac Day commemorations tomorrow.
