Witness from US in Vic terror court case

A Melbourne nurse who allegedly worked with Islamic State in Syria was in contact with a US woman before he was charged, a court has heard.

The woman, whose identity has been suppressed, will fly to Melbourne to give evidence in Adam Matthew Brookman's case.

The Melbourne Magistrates Court heard she had communicated with Brookman between November 2013 and May 2015.

Social media evidence will also form part of the case, the court heard.

Brookman was arrested by Australian Federal Police at Sydney Airport last year.

The father of five was repatriated to Australia after he turned himself in to Turkish authorities.

Brookman, 40, is accused of knowingly providing support to IS by undertaking guard duty and reconnaissance in 2014.

It is alleged this support would help "prepare or foster" a terrorist act.

A second charge relates to undertaking the guard and reconnaissance duty with the intention of supporting the terrorist organisation.

He appeared in court via video link on Wednesday, when prosecutors asked the court to suppress the name of the US witness.

Magistrate Tim Gattuso also raised concerns that an AFP member had tried to contact him directly about the suppression order, earlier this month.

He did not speak to them.

"It clearly shouldn't happen, it's just not appropriate," he said of the attempted contact.

Brookman was due to face a committal hearing next month, but it was pushed back to start in August after defence barrister Peter Morrissey, SC, said they were waiting on material.

Brookman did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody to reappear in court in May.
