Device on car in Vic "not an explosive"

A suspicious device seen underneath a car involved in a police pursuit in outer Melbourne is not an explosive.

The bomb squad inspected the device with a robot and has ruled out any threat, a process which closed of a major road in Hoppers Crossing for more than six hours.

"It is not an explosive," a Victoria Police spokeswoman told AAP.

Police had attempted to pull over the car, just after midday, but the driver did not stop and after a short pursuit the car crashed into two other vehicles.

The driver, a man aged in his 30s, fled but was arrested in a nearby car park.

"He's certainly not telling us what is in the package and anything that is protruding from beneath the car, it appears suspicious," Acting Senior Sergeant Fiona Waters told the Seven Network while the bomb squad investigation was underway.

Police are continuing to speak to the driver.

A male occupant from one of the other cars received minor injuries in the crash.

The incident triggered the closure of Hoppers Crossing train station for several hours late on Friday, along with major traffic diversions through peak-hour.
