No plans to expand Vic cop Tasers: govt

The Victorian government has no immediate plans to expand the rollout of stun guns to Victoria Police despite calls by the police union.

The Police Association wants both major parties to back Tasers for all operational police in the lead up to the November election.

Association secretary Ron Iddles says Victoria is the only mainland state where Tasers have not been given to all operational police.

"We've been lobbying now for 10 years to have Tasers supplied to all operational police," Det Sen Sgt Iddles told AAP on Tuesday.

"It gives the police officer another option, other than a lethal option."

But Police and Emergency Services Minister Kim Wells says the government has already granted a request by police Chief Commissioner Ken Lay to deliver stun guns to regional police stations.

Mr Wells said Victoria's 29 24-hour regional stations would share in a $13.5 million program to buy 580 Tasers, which should arrive by the end of the financial year.

"In the city we have the Special Operations Group who already have the Tasers," Mr Wells told reporters.

"So if there's an incident that happens somewhere in the city, the Special Operations Group can get there very quickly. However, if there's a situation in Wodonga, Bairnsdale, Mallacoota, Mildura, the Special Operations Group would take some time to get there."

But Mr Wells said he would continue talks with the chief commissioner and the Police Association.
